Behind the Books: A Real-Life Look at Self-Publishing from the Kitchen Table
Let’s clear something up: if you’ve ever looked at my books, my social posts, or my websites and thought,
“Wow, she must have a whole team helping her!” — bless your sweet heart.
Because no, friend. There is no team. There is me.
Me — in sweatpants, balancing a laptop on the edge of the kitchen table, with Jimmy singing full volume in the background, a 70-year-old dad asking if I’ve seen the remote, and a timer reminding me that lunch doesn’t pack itself.
What I do have:
- A half-charged laptop
- Endless snack wrappers
- Wi-Fi that cuts out just enough to keep things interesting
- And an imagination powered by lukewarm coffee and stubborn determination
What I don’t have?
- A graphic designer
- A marketing guru
- A personal assistant
- Or even a quiet room
Self-Publishing in the Real World
Every book I publish comes from stolen moments — between appointments, during naptime, or after everyone else is in bed. I create coloring pages while reheating coffee. I write blog posts with one eye on the clock. And I upload books in a flurry of tabs and chaos, hoping the internet holds out just long enough to hit “Publish.”
It’s not glamorous.
It’s not perfect.
But it’s mine.
Why I Keep Going
Because someone, somewhere, prints out a Jimmy activity page and smiles.
Because a mom sees her child in my story and feels seen.
Because I promised myself I’d try — even when trying looks like working in 45-minute bursts while spaghetti sauce simmers.
So no, I don’t have a team.
But I have heart. I have hustle.
And I have a child who believes I’m magic — even if I forget what day it is half the time.
If you’re building something out of the in-between moments too? I see you. I’m cheering for you. And if you ever need a team… I’ll share my snacks.
